Schengen visa-free stay: the 90/180 rule, EES and ETIAS

· ~6 min read · verified against European Commission sources

France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Switzerland — the 29-country Schengen area runs one shared set of border rules, and Hong Kong SAR, Taiwan and Singapore passports all get visa-free entry. But the allowance works differently from Japan's flat 90 days: Schengen counts your days on a rolling 90-in-any-180 basis across all member states combined, a digital entry system (EES) is now live, and a paid travel authorisation (ETIAS) arrives in 2027. Here is what each means for your trip.

Fast answer

HK SAR, Taiwan and Singapore passport holders may stay in the Schengen area up to 90 days in any 180-day period, no visa, with the days pooled across all 29 countries. No pre-travel authorisation is required yet — ETIAS is expected in 2027. Entry now registers in the EES digital system (fingerprints and face image instead of passport stamps). The passport must be valid at least 3 months beyond the departure date and issued within the last 10 years; Taiwan passports must carry the personal ID number.

PassportStayEntry method
Hong Kong SAR90 days in any 180Visa-free + EES registration
Taiwan (ID number required)90 days in any 180Visa-free + EES registration
Singapore90 days in any 180Visa-free + EES registration

How the 90/180 rule actually counts

The limit is: in any rolling 180-day window, your total days inside the Schengen area must not exceed 90. To check, count backwards 180 days from "today" and add up every day you were present (entry and exit days both count). Three examples:

The European Commission publishes an official Schengen 90/180 calculator — run your dates through it before booking. Overstays are recorded in EES and affect future entries.

EES: the digital border, now live

The Entry/Exit System (EES) phased in from October 2025 and is now operational across the area. In practice:

ETIAS: not needed until 2027

The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) has been repeatedly rescheduled; the current official line is that it starts after EES is fully deployed, expected in 2027, and no applications can be filed yet. When it launches, visa-exempt travellers (including all three passports) will apply online — expected cost around €20, valid up to 3 years, multiple entries. The official EU travel site warns that any site claiming to file ETIAS applications today is fraudulent. Until then: passport and straight to the border.

Passport validity: 3 months + the 10-year rule

Schengen's rule differs from Asia's six-month destinations: the passport must be valid at least 3 months beyond the intended departure date from the area and issued within the previous 10 years. The second condition catches older passports that still have months left but were issued more than ten years ago — both airlines and border officers enforce it.
